Last Saturday, 6 Mountains Tea had an open house. At previous gatherings, Erick has always made the tea. His knowledge and experience allowing him to quickly and smoothly prepare and serve the tea. However, Erick wants others to learn and practice preparing the tea, so he ask two of those attending to do the honours. Bryce was first up with 6 Mountain Tea’s 20-year old raw Pu Erh. This was a light, refreshing brew with the interesting musty flavour so typical of Pu Erh teas, and, interestingly, very little aftertaste. It was a great way to begin. Next up was a new pot, a different tea, and a second hand. Ben was tapped to prepare a 40-year-old raw Pu Erh called “Joy” from Master Ho of Taiwan. As could be expected, this well-aged Pu Erh was pungent and earthy with a deep red colour. The taste was strong and smooth with no bitterness. While my unsophisticated palate was unable to identify all of the components of this tea, it was delightful and refreshing. The aroma and flavours of this tea stayed with me long after the event ended. At the end of the day, the delicious tea, the sharing of tea making duties, and the relaxed comradery of the group resulted in a very satisfying event.
